Types of Microneedling Treatments: Dermapen, U225 Mesotherapy Gun, and Infini RF

Posted By: Lic. Silvia Derasner | June 19th, 2020 | Blog

As we get older, it’s common to look for anti-aging treatments that can help us look better and restore our youthful glow. Not all anti-aging serums produce the short-term result we are looking for, and exercise and diet can only go so far.

While surgical procedures are an option, not everyone is comfortable going under the knife. Luckily, there are other ways to tighten up one’s skin and turn back the clock on aging. One of the most popular methods is microneedling.

What is microneedling and how does microneedling work? Below, we detail three of the most common forms of microneedling: Dermapen, U225 Mesotherapy Gun, and Infini RF. Keep reading to see which treatment might be best for your skin.

Types of Microneedling

What Is Microneedling?

Microneedling is an anti-aging treatment that uses multiple tiny, sterile needles to penetrate the skin and cause tiny punctures. Your body’s natural response to the tiny pinpricks is to heal itself by making new collagen-rich tissue.

As you age, your skin naturally loses collagen—a substance that gives your skin elasticity and firmness. Microneedling works by creating a controlled injury and encouraging your skin to make more collagen, thus rejuvenating the skin, leaving it firmer, smoother, and more toned.

The newly generated skin tissue also evens out skin tone and texture, which is why it’s a great treatment for scars, fine lines, and large pores.

Microneedling can also be used on the scalp to treat hair loss.

The procedure last 15-30 minutes, depending on the area being treated, with no down-time.

There are different types of microneedling procedures, all of which take a slightly different approach. The main similarity, though, is that tiny needles are always used to prick the skin and stimulate collagen growth.

Types of Microneedling Treatments

At the Anti Aging Toronto Clinic, we offer three types of microneedling treatments: Dermapen, U225 Mesotherapy Gun, and Infini RF.

  • Dermapen

Dermapen, as the name suggests, is an FDA-approved device or microneedling pen that creates micro-injuries in the skin, using tiny needles. It has been proven to help improve the quality, elasticity, tone, and texture of the skin by triggering new collagen and elastin synthesis, as well as to help improve blood flow in the skin.

How It Works: Creating over 1,000 punctures per second, Dermapen is one of the most concentrated and comfortable microneedling treatments available. It works by puncturing tiny holes in your skin and administering specially formulated cocktails, usually consisting of hyaluronic acid, to target various skin conditions.

There are a few at-home Dermapens on the market, all of which have similar traits. Which Dermapen should you use for microneedling?

While an at-home Dermapen may be effective, your best option is to book an appointment at an anti-aging clinic to get the treatment administered by a professional. One of the benefits of Dermapen is that it can be modified to suit your specific skin type or issue because the technician can control the style and depth of the needling.

Efficacy: Dermapen, suitable for all skin types, can successfully provide an effective long-term skin boost. Compared to derma rollers, it produces better results, because it can be customized according to your specific needs. Due to its pen-like shape, small tip, and fast vibrations, it has great precision and is ideal for superficial or deeper treatments.

Typically, four to six treatments are recommended, depending on your skin condition. To maximize the results, follow-up refresher treatments should be done twice a year.

Downtime: Although the procedure is relatively quick and painless, you may experience a few side effects, such as redness and slight puffiness, immediately after the procedure. You might also notice some light swelling, a slight pinkish colour to your complexion, and/or some dryness or tightness; however, this should subside within a day or two. You will experience longer downtime when you receive deeper treatments such as acne scar removal.

Overall, the procedure is minimally invasive, and doesn’t require much downtime.

  • U225 Mesotherapy Gun

Mesotherapy treats the skin by creating thousands of tiny, controlled microinjections into the mesoderm (middle layer of the skin). It can be used on the face, body, or scalp. Typically, mesotherapy is performed using a U225 mesogun.

How It Works: Mesotherapy injections provide mechanical stimulation to the skin, which stimulates growth factors and enhances collagen production. Oftentimes, various pharmaceuticals, medicines, and vitamins as well as amino acid and hyaluronic acid are injected to revitalize the skin’s appearance without causing scarring and inflammation.

The mesogun uses pneumatic (air) pressure and produces almost no trauma to the skin. Due to the precision and speed of the mesogun’s injections, mesotherapy distributes specialized treatment directly to the deeper layers of the skin and is virtually painless. Essentially, the mesogun delivers the treatment so quickly that your body doesn’t even have time to register what has happened.

Efficacy: Mesotherapy is a highly effective solution for treating signs of aging and skin imperfections. Specifically, the U225 mesogun is ideal for sensitive areas of the face, such as around the eyes, nose, and lips, because of its precision. It can also be used on various areas of the body and on the scalp, however.

Mesotherapy is typically better for skin issues that must be treated within the lower areas of the skin (e.g. the mesoderm), because it injects an active solution each time the needle penetrates the skin.

Downtime: After a mesotherapy treatment using the U225 mesogun, there are very few side effects, meaning you can expect little downtime. Since no anesthesia is required, typically, patients experience a mild tingling sensation on the skin for up to 48 hours.

Compared to other types of microneedling treatments, where some mild to moderate redness, swelling, or skin sensitivity is expected for a few days, mesotherapy has the shortest downtime.

  • Infini RF

Infini RF microneedling is a skin tightening and rejuvenating procedure that helps improve elasticity in the face, arms, neck, and stomach area. It is most effective on fine lines, wrinkles, and scars, and it improves the tone and texture of the skin.

How It Works: Unlike the other two microneedling treatments listed above, Infini uses radio frequency (RF) technology in conjunction with microneedling to produce better results.

Using tiny micro-needles that are made of gold-coated, surgical-grade stainless steel, the procedure works by delivering thermal energy deep into the dermis, so that new collagen and elastin can be produced. The needles are insulated, meaning the radio frequency energy is focused on the tips only and, therefore, won’t heat up or burn the epidermis (top layer of skin). Due to this, your skin is less likely to look inflamed or swollen.

Efficacy: Often referred to as a “non-surgical facelift,” Infini RF microneedling can treat various types of skin conditions, including fine lines and wrinkles (e.g. smoker’s lines and crow’s feet), scars (e.g. acne scars and surgical scars), and stretch marks. The treatment does not cause any permanent or severe damage to the skin and can deliver similar results as a facelift, without the lengthy downtime.

Typically, it takes about three weeks to start seeing results, but it could take up to six months for the body to start rebuilding collagen. For the best results, it’s recommended to have three treatments, each about one month apart.

Downtime: Each Infini treatment takes anywhere from one and a half to two hours (mostly because the area needs to be numbed using a topic anesthesia). However, unlike surgical treatments, Infini microneedling only has a downtime of about three days.

Initially after the treatment, you may notice some minor redness and swelling, which could take anywhere from 24 to 36 hours to subside.

Which Microneedling Treatment Is the Best?

The answer to this question depends solely on what you are looking to correct with the microneedling procedure. Each treatment listed above results in collagen growth, stimulates skin rejuvenation, and has proven results.
