Tips for Avoiding Summer Acne

prevention for summer acne

The summer season is the best time to indulge in fun, outdoor activities. But the combination of summertime heat and physical activity can also lead to unsightly acne breakouts and blackheads. Fortunately, one of the best forms of acne treatment is prevention! Taking steps to prevent your acne from getting worse is the best option for keeping your skin clean and clear this summer. We know most people want to maintain youthful, radiant skin during all seasons—to that end, the following are the best ways to avoid the worst of summer acne:

Mind the Sweat!

Acne happens when pores on the skin become clogged and/or inflamed. If sweat gets trapped in your pores, it causes moisture pockets that bacteria thrive in. This is most commonly found in areas where workout clothes or sweatbands press against the skin, as they can trap the sweat in place and intensify an acne breakout. To prevent your sweat from leading to an acne breakout, it’s best to have a shower after periods of heightened sweating.

Cleanse the Oil

Sweat isn’t the only thing that can clog your pores. Your skin’s own oil glands can increase in heat and humidity, which can lead to an oil clog—so make use of a nice cleanser! Your skin type will dictate how many times per day you will need to use an acne cleanser, but the average person should need to perform the cleanse once in the morning and once in the evening.

Ease the Moisturizer

During colder weather, moisturizing regularly is important to maintain supple skin. During the summer season, it’s best to switch to a lighter moisturizing solution as part of your acne treatment regiment. As always, look for noncomedogenic and oil-free products.

Sunscreen, Sunscreen, Sunscreen

A good sunscreen has multiple benefits. Primarily, it prevents sunburns. This is helpful for personal comfort, skin integrity, and long-term health. Many acne treatments or beauty treatments like chemical peels will make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. If you make use of one of these, then a layer of sunscreen is recommended even if you are only going outside for a short period of time. A noncomedogenic, oil-free sunscreen of at least SPF 15 is best for both protecting yourself and toning down any existing acne redness.
