How Much Weight Do Women Gain During Pregnancy?

Your healthcare provider will be able to give you a closer estimate of how much weight you should gain when pregnant, depending on your body type. A woman with average weight before getting pregnant should gain about 25 to 35 pounds during her pregnancy. Women who are underweight should gain 28 to 40 pounds. Overweight women only need to gain about 15 to 25 pounds during pregnancy. Although weight gain is an inevitable part of pregnancy, healthy eating is an important step to managing your weight during these nine months. For most women, their bodies will naturally lose weight after maintaining a healthy diet, breastfeeding, and including moderate exercise in their daily routine.

Causes of Postpartum Weight Gain

In some cases, women will continue gaining weight, even after pregnancy. There are many reasons for this, but sleeplessness, stress, and hormones are just a few reasons why women may continue to gain weight postpartum. Also, if women continue to eat as much as they did while they were pregnant, they may be contributing to the weight gain. It is also important to keep in mind that if you eat well, avoid fatty and sugary foods, do 30 minutes of light activity every day, and get enough sleep, you will have a better chance of losing the pregnancy weight, and getting back to your normal, healthy figure. If you are concerned that your weight gain is abnormal after pregnancy, see your family doctor.

How Can You Lose Fat After Pregnancy?

    • Get active:

Most new moms are too exhausted and overwhelmed to even think about exercising. This is absolutely normal, and it is important not to do too much exercise until six weeks after giving birth, especially if you have had a Caesarean section. If you want to lose belly fat after pregnancy or C-section, start by walking around the block. If you feel uncomfortable or experience any unusual symptoms, take a rest. Gradually increase your walking distance each week.

    • Breastfeed:

Technology and science has allowed us to create solutions and formulas that can mimic the nutrition of natural breast milk, but there’s nothing like the real thing. Breastfeeding is not only beneficial to the baby—it can also help mothers lose weight. Breastfeeding burns 600 to 800 calories a day, even if you were sitting comfortably and feeding your baby. Some women are able to drop all of their body fat from breastfeeding alone! However, as soon as you stop or taper off breastfeeding you may start to gain weight again, unless you adjust your diet and add more exercise.

    • Weight training:

Weight training will go a long way to speeding up your metabolism, and help with belly fat reduction. There are many exercises you can do, even with lighter weights, to help you lose body fat. It is important to note, however, that muscle mass weighs more than body fat, so you may actually look slimmer and weigh heavier.

    • Take naps:

Getting plenty of sleep has been shown to help with weight loss, because you are fasting during this time. It can also help you regulate your metabolism, and keep your energy levels high when you are awake. Whatever you do, do not sacrifice sleep, even for exercise.

Tone Your Tummy with SculpSure

Working out and healthy eating are the most important steps in getting you back into the shape you were before you were pregnant. However, sometimes body fat lingers in areas like the abdomen. In these cases, you may need to seek solutions from the professionals. The SculpSure treatment is designed for cases like these, where healthy eating and exercise are unable to target stubborn areas of fat. Since the fat loss is gradual after each procedure, your appearance will not be dramatic and shocking. Initial results appear about six weeks after treatment, and at 12 weeks you will notice the most dramatic effects. Here are some benefits to this gradual fat loss:

  • After your appointment, you will begin to lose inches around the treated area. Your friends and family won’t be able to tell that you have had any work done, because the transformation takes weeks to complete. If this is something you want to keep private, you will be able to do so.

  • Because of the way the SculpSure treatment is designed, the effects are permanent. The treatment heats up and stimulates large fat cells, causing damage to them. To “heal,” the body will then eliminate these cells permanently, and they do not grow back. This is much different from some surgical weight loss treatments, where large amounts of fat are removed all at once. The body panics, and sometimes tries to compensate by replacing the fat as quickly as possible in other areas. With SculpSure, the body does not go through this kind of shock, and does not react by rapidly gaining weight in other areas.

Is There Any Risk Involved?

The SculpSure procedure is less painful than other more invasive methods of fat loss like surgery. Patients will feel a warm, tingling sensation, with intermittent periods of cooling as the laser pads work on the treated area. The risks are minimal, and complications are uncommon, but they may take the form of swelling, redness, or a feeling of tightness in the skin. The side effects are short-term, and will fade after a few hours or days. There is little to no downtime with the SculpSure procedure, so you can go back to your normal activities shortly after the treatment.
