How to be Wrinkle-Free with Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy

Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapies

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is a recent development in skin rejuvenation treatments that began in 2006. Although it has only been around for nine years, PRP therapy has quickly become a promising and effective way to produce young, wrinkle-free skin without the injection of artificial compounds.

PRP therapy is best suited for those looking for natural but distinct improvements in skin texture or tone, with minimal to no recovery time. The main appeal of PRP is that it provides skin rejuvenation by using the body’s own resources—your cells and natural growth factors. PRP therapy can naturally restore the appearance of youthful-looking skin, eliminating wrinkles, keloid scars, and acne scars, and enhancing skin elasticity and tone.

The “PRP Facelift”

While it sounds very dramatic, a “PRP facelift,” which is a common name for PRP therapy, isn’t that far from the truth. Blood contains a number of platelet-derived growth factors (PDGFs) that, among other restorative functions, form clots when we get cuts and stimulate tissue regeneration. After the clotting cascade finishes and a scab forms, PDGFs begin stimulating the production of collagen proteins to grow new skin and close the wound. It is this behaviour that PRP therapy capitalizes on.

Remember that a wrinkle is essentially a fold or crease in the skin. By injecting platelet-rich plasma, the body will begin a healing process consisting of collagen synthesis and tissue repair. Instead of mending a cut with smooth new skin, your body will fill out a wrinkle.

Three-Step Process

A PRP skin rejuvenation treatment takes place across three main steps. First, blood is drawn from your body. It doesn’t matter where, as long as it’s both easy to access the vein and comfortable for the patient. Next, the blood is spun in a centrifuge to separate the platelets from the rest of the blood components. The resulting concentration of platelets contains an array of proteins, enzymes, and hormones designed to stimulate collagen production and tissue regeneration. Lastly, the PRP solution is placed inside a micro-needling gun and is painlessly injected into the desired areas.

Since PRP therapy uses your body’s own healing process, it can take some time to see full results. The full skin rejuvenation effect requires about two to three treatments to be felt, and up to eight months for the full collagen synthesis to complete. Afterwards, however, the effects last for up to 18 months—the longest of any injection treatment.
