Hair Loss a Major Problem? Treat Yourself with PRP Therapy

A girl having hair loss problemHair loss can be a source of anxiety, low self-confidence, and embarrassment for both men and women. That is why recent developments in platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy are so important. While normally considered a skin rejuvenation treatment, the same mechanisms that let PRP therapy restore your skin can also be applied to the scalp. With only a few treatments, and without the use of artificial compounds, hair follicles can be restored and new hair growth stimulated.

PRP therapy relies on triggering the body’s own restoration process so it won’t lose results over time.

How PRP Therapy Works on Hair Follicles

Time for a bit of science. The blood in our bodies contains platelet-derived growth factors (PDGFs) that do everything from form clots to restore lost skin cells. If applied to the scalp, the same restorative properties work on hair follicles. This means that areas rendered balding or thinning by age or androgenic alopecia (male-pattern baldness) can be stimulated to produce new hair by using the body’s own healing process.

PRP therapy is a safe and natural treatment to stimulate hair follicles because the procedure takes the good cells from your scalp and injects them into the area where the hair growth is needed.

Three Steps to Hair Restoration

The PRP therapy procedure, when used as a hair rejuvenation treatment, is very similar to the procedure used on skin rejuvenation:

•First, the blood is drawn.
•The blood is spun in a centrifuge to isolate and concentrate the PDGFs and plasma.
•The solution is then prepared and injected into the scalp in areas where hair is thinning or balding.

The procedure itself is relatively quick and can be carried out in a single 60-90 minute session. Unlike other methods of hair restoration, there is no chance of rejection, side effects, or getting a blood infection. No foreign or artificial materials are being used, just the concentrated dose of your body’s own platelets and plasma.

Keep in mind that while PRP therapy is an effective hair rejuvenation treatment, it is not a fast one. Not only does hair take time to grow but the follicles themselves will need time to heal. Having said that, most patients start seeing results after two treatments.
