Frequently Asked Questions about Botox

Posted By: Lic. Silvia Derasner | March 21st, 2018 | Blog

Botox has been used by doctors for years to treat wrinkles and facial creases. It is also being used to help people with involuntary muscle movements and other related issues. It blocks signals from the nerves to the muscles, which makes wrinkles and muscles relax and soften. This has led it to become one of the most popular treatments for aging skin. If you want to learn more about Botox injections, here are some frequently asked questions.

faqs about botox treatment

What Is Botox Used For?

Botox, a brand name for botulinum toxin, has and can be used for multiple purposes, with different products producing different effects. Some types are used to treat eye problems, muscle stiffness or spasms, migraines, or an overactive bladder or are used for cosmetic purposes. In terms of eye disorders, Botox has been used to treat crossed eyes and uncontrolled blinking. It has also been used to prevent headaches and by people with frequent migraines, as it helps to relax muscles by blocking the release of a chemical known as acetylcholine.

Botox has been used to treat severe under arm sweating as well, by blocking the chemicals that activate the sweat glands. It is not a cure, and symptoms will gradually return as the medication wears off, but its long-term effect is one of the reasons why people use it to hide the appearance of wrinkles and achieve a more plump and youthful appearance.

How Long Do the Effects of Botox Last?

The effects of a Botox treatment will last between three and six months. As the muscle action begins to return, or as the lines and wrinkles reappear, it is time to go for another appointment. Botox can cause muscles to shrink, so lines and wrinkles will gradually appear less noticeable over time.

What Are the Side Effects of Botox?

The side effects of Botox include the following:

  • Temporary muscle weakening or paralysis (to treat involuntary muscle movements and other similar health conditions)
  • Sensitivity and pain on and around the injection sites
  • Temporary swelling, bruising, and redness
  • Dry, irritated, itchy, watery, or red eyes after treatment near the eyes
  • Regular patients may experience long-term effects due to allergic reactions (chest pain, hives, difficulty breathing, seizures, abnormal bleeding, speech alterations, etc.)
  • Flu-like symptoms

What Does Botox Do to My Body?

Botox works by temporarily paralyzing muscles to prevent them from contracting. Because of this, it has been used to relieve muscle aches and smooth out lines on the face. It is not used for lines around the mouth, as these muscles are necessary for talking and eating.

How Long Do I Have to Wait to Lay Down after Botox?

Exercise and frequent movement are not recommended after Botox treatments. Sometimes, the Botox can migrate to other areas of the face where it was not intended to treat, and exercise can metabolize the treatment, reducing its effectiveness. It is not recommended to lie down or do any exercises where your head is below your heart to avoid Botox migration. You should wait to lay down for at least three or four hours after the treatment.

Can I Work Out after Getting Botox?

You should not exercise after Botox. After it is injected, it takes time for the proteins to diffuse into the muscle that needs to be treated. If you exercise vigorously after a Botox treatment, it can cause the product to be metabolized before it has had time to do its work. This means your procedure will be much less effective. Another reason why you should not work out after getting Botox treatments, is because sweat and friction can migrate the Botox from the intended treatment sites. If you get a bruise after Botox, it can become worse, especially if you work out right after the treatment. Although working out may not have significant adverse side effects, it will make the treatment less effective.

Can I Take a Shower after Botox?

Showering after your Botox treatment is completely fine. However, you should be careful of what temperature water you use. Namely, you should never have a hot shower after a Botox procedure; this heat increases blood flow to your face, causing the Botox to shift around and leaving you with unnatural results. You should avoid soaking in a hot tub, sitting in a steam shower, and cleansing your face with hot water.

Can I Wear Makeup after Getting Botox?

Although it is not advisable to put makeup on right after Botox injections, you can apply it soon after. Ideally, you should have nothing on your face at least four hours following treatment. After this time, you may use some makeup to cover any bruising or swelling on the site. Makeup should be applied very delicately, since you should not be rubbing the area several hours following treatment. If there is too much makeup and rubbing on the site, you can increase the irritation and cause more discomfort for yourself.

Can I Have a Glass of Wine after Botox?

Botox injections may cause a variety of side effects, including dizziness or drowsiness. Drinking alcohol can make this worse, especially after you receive the injections. Therefore, it is recommended not to consume alcohol after getting injections until you know exactly how you react to the treatment. Even before receiving Botox, you should avoid alcohol and other anti-inflammatory substances like aspirin for about two weeks. However, you should have a good breakfast that includes both food and drink before your procedure. This is done to decrease the chances of light-headedness during the treatment. After the treatment, you should also avoid consuming excess salts, which can increase swelling.
