Acne Scars

Acne scars are a common condition characterized by hollowed-out or depressed indents in the skin. These come about in the wake of acne outbreaks, usually deep ones that can occur at any point in life. A combination of bacteria in the pimple and the body’s own response erodes the collagen of nearby tissue and results in damage and overall structural loss of the skin. An acne scar can be anything from small, narrow indents, to localized “craters,” to broader swaths of discernable texture. Acne scars do have a genetic component that can make people more susceptible, but overall they can happen to anyone.

How the Spectra Peel Laser Can Help

There are numerous treatments available for acne scars. Previously, dermabrasion was the only option. This was a rather uncomfortable procedure where the affected layers of skin were effectively “sanded off.” Fortunately, new and better techniques are available. The most advanced and effective is the use of a Spectra Peel laser. This is a dual-action laser that allows for precise, non-invasive and virtually pain-free stimulation of the affected skin.

The laser’s application provides two main effects. The first is that the tissue is stimulated into furthering collagen production and cell regeneration, allowing scars to be healed and any pitting to be filled in by new skin. The second is that it helps reduce the appearance of inflamed skin, treating overall redness and helping restore natural colour.

Treatment Details

Since the use of a Spectra Peel laser is based around stimulating your body’s natural restorative mechanisms, the results take time and more than one visit to maintain momentum. The exact number of treatment sessions depends on a few different factors such as skin type and the severity of the acne scarring. Generally speaking, however, mild cases of acne scarring can take as few as three sessions to produce dramatic results.

There are a few small steps to a Spectra Peel laser treatment procedure. First, a light layer of specialized lotion is applied to the skin. This gives the appearance of wearing a mud mask, since the lotion has a carbon base. When the laser is applied, it is common to feel a deep tingling, warmth, or sense of your skin tightening. This is supposed to happen; the tightening is actually part of what triggers the collagen production.

Spectra Peel treatments have no associated downtime. You can drop in, get your treatment, and then go about your day immediately as your skin grows smoother, scars fade and fill in, and you look youthful and vibrant.
